Dust control on conveyor belts

You know an operation has a conveyor belt dust control problem when the emissions can be seen from space. An extreme example is the 61-mile conveyor belt. It connects the Bou Craa phosphate mines with the coast in Morocco. It was built in 1972. In addition, it carries 2,000 metric tonnes per hour to El-Aaiun. The belt is covered. However, the wind disperses dust over long distances. Therefore, this shows a serious challenge in conveyor belt dust control.

Dust increases operating costs. In addition, it reduces system efficiency. It also worsens air quality. As a result, it affects workers. It lowers their productivity. On the other hand, it puts their health at risk. Likewise, dust damages mechanical parts. It also clogs rollers. For this reason, more maintenance is required. As a result, poor control increases costs.

For this reason, many companies use atomized mist. This technology improves conveyor belt dust control. In addition, it allows operation without stopping the system.

How is dust generated in conveyor belt dust control?

Dust arises from four factors. They are wind, disruption, transition and impact. Each one affects control.

Wind is a major problem. In addition, it is stronger outdoors. Covers help. However, they do not eliminate dust. For this reason, atomized mist is used. As a result, this improves conveyor belt dust control.

Disruption occurs between the rollers. For example, the belt moves the material irregularly. In addition, the material bounces and generates particles. This complicates control.

Transition occurs at the discharge. At this point, the material comes into contact with the air. Therefore, emissions are generated.

Impact occurs when the material falls. For example, it can fall into hoppers or piles. In addition, the height has an influence. Moisture also affects the process. As a result, this reduces system efficiency.

Different systems and solutions

There are three types of systems: standard, stackers and tripper. In addition, each one requires a different approach.

  • Standard systems are fixed. Therefore, they apply misting at discharge points. As a result, this improves control.
  • Stackers work at great heights. However, they generate more dust. For this reason, they require more control.
  • Tripper systems move horizontally. In addition, they operate in enclosed spaces. Therefore, dust builds up quickly.

Good dust control improves efficiency, reduces costs and protects health in industrial operations.
